Teeth Whitening Q & A

What causes yellow teeth?

A variety of factors lead to your teeth turning yellow. Age, certain medications, and the foods you eat and drink may all be contributors. Surface stains on the enamel of your teeth from drinks like coffee, tea, and red wine, can make your teeth look yellow. Smoking and tobacco are also big culprits.

Over time, these surface stains go beneath the enamel to the dentin of your tooth, making the stain even harder to remove.

Is teeth whitening safe?

Yes. Whitening your teeth is a safe process when you follow product guidelines and instructions. The team at Northwest Dental offers Zoom whitening treatments for safe, effective results. You can choose to have your teeth whitened in just one visit, or gradually with a take-home whitening kit.

In both cases, the Zoom whitening solution is completely safe to put on your teeth and in your mouth. The only discomfort you may experience is temporary tooth and gum sensitivity from the bleaching agents.

How does the Zoom in-office procedure work?

The Zoom in-office teeth-whitening process is simple and can potentially make your teeth up to eight shades brighter in just one visit.* At your appointment, one of the experienced Northwest Dental team members fits upper and lower dental trays into your mouth. The trays hold the bleaching solution.

Next, your practitioner covers your gums and lips to protect them from the solution. They fill the trays with the bleaching solution and position a specialized bright light over your teeth. You sit back and relax as the bleach and light work together to whiten your teeth for three 15-minute treatments in a single visit.

Between treatments, you wait comfortably, and after the last bleaching treatment, your dental expert applies a gel to your teeth to minimizes any sensitivity you may feel. That’s it. Your teeth are whiter and your smile is brighter in about two hours.

The Northwest Dental team also offers at-home teeth-whitening kits for a more gradual approach to whitening teeth over a couple weeks.
